10 Facial Masks to Brighten Dull Skin

Everyone wants radiant and glowing skin. It makes you look young, healthy and brimming with energy and vitality.


Sometimes, though, nature works against you and, whether it’s because you are tired, stressed, or just haven’t been eating properly, your skin can take on that dull, lifeless look that makes you look all washed out.

It may just be that you need to get a good night’s sleep, drink more water and eat more healthily.

If you’ve tried all that and your skin still doesn’t have the glowing look that you want it to, try some of these wonderful facial masks that will brighten up dull skin fast.

1. Tomato and yoghurt

This is a really simple facial mask recipe that will exfoliate your skin and lighten any scars and blemishes that you may have.

Exfoliation is always a good first step to brighten up skin, because it removes the dead skin cells that could be what is causing your skin to look dull.

Take a teaspoon of freshly made tomato paste (just blend some tomatoes in a blender) and mix it with two teaspoons of plain yoghurt. Apply the mixture to your face and leave it on for around 10 minutes.

2. Honey and lemon

Honey and lemon work beautifully together to brighten and smooth the complexion and it is particularly good for people who suffer with acne.

Lemon brightens and exfoliates the skin, while the honey will fight acne causing bacteria and reduce inflammation.

Mix up one tablespoon of lemon juice with two tablespoons of honey. Apply it to your skin and leave it on for about 10 minutes.

If you have sensate skin, it’s best to avoid this treatment, as it might be too harsh for delicate sensitive skin

3. Papaya and yoghurt

Papaya contains a natural ingredient called papain, which gently bleaches the skin and lightens dark patches and blemishes.

Blend half a cup of papaya into a paste and then stir in a tablespoon of plain yoghurt. Apply to your face and leave it to sit for ten minutes before you wash it off again with warm water.

The combination of papaya and yoghurt will brighten your complexion and firm up the skin.

4. Gram flour

Gram flour has been used for centuries to lighten skin and it also contains nutrients that will nourish the skin and make it look healthier.

Just mix gram flour and water into a fine paste and then apply it to your face. Leave it in until it has dried and then wash it off with lukewarm water.

This face mask is especially good if you have oily skin, as it dries up excess oil as well.

5. Avocado and honey

Avocado has amazing benefits for skin and it’s great for putting the life back into dull, lacklustre skin.

Avocado moisturises the skin and it also contains anti-inflammatory ingredients that will reduce any irritation and redness on the skin.

The honey in this recipe will fight infection and bring back the glow to your skin. Mix the flesh of half an avocado with a teaspoon of honey, apply it on the skin, and leave to sit for around ten minutes.

6. Turmeric

Turmeric is another one of amazing, ancient beauty ingredients that can be used to brighten the skin and improve the complexion.

It has a natural bleaching properties and it also contains powerful antiseptic ingredients and antioxidants.

Add turmeric powder to milk until you have a fine paste. Then, apply to the skin, leave it on until it has dried (for about 10 minutes), and then wash off with lukewarm water.

7. Coconut milk and honey

Coconut milk has wonderful skin nourishing properties that will soon have your skin looking radiant and glowing again.

Mix two teaspoons of coconut milk with a teaspoon of honey and a teaspoon of fresh lemon juice. Massage the mixture gently into your face and then leave it to sit for ten minutes. You can then rinse it off with warm water.

9. Oranges

Oranges are well known for their high Vitamin C content, and vitamin C is one of the most important ingredients in skin care.

Oranges also have a mild bleaching effect, so they will lighten the skin and lessen the appearance of blemishes.

You can combine the power of turmeric and oranges by mixing two tablespoons of orange juice and a pinch of turmeric powder. Apply the mixture to your skin and wash it off after about 10 minutes.

10. Aloe vera gel

Aloe vera gel has the ability to restore the skin’s natural colour and it will also moisturise and nourish the skin too.

Simply apply fresh aloe vera gel to the skin and leave it to sit for about ten minutes before you wash it off.
