How to Make Lip Gloss? Recipe Guidelines
Lip gloss is both beautiful and practical. It looks great and it helps to protect your lips from the wind and the sun.
Making your own lip gloss is a lot easier than you think and it’s great fun to do. You can choose your own colours, scents and flavours and it makes a great gift for friends too.
You can start off with the really easy recipes that use petroleum jelly as the a base, or you can jump straight in and make a more professional lip gloss that uses beeswax and other ingredients.
One thing is for sure; homemade lip gloss is a lot cheaper than store bought lip gloss and you know exactly what ingredients are in it too.
Here are some tips and recipes to get you started making your own lip gloss.
1. Making lip gloss with Vaseline
With petroleum jelly, also known as Vaseline, homemade lip gloss is the simplest to make. The method is really straight forward.
You warm the Vaseline in a microwave, add your choice of colourings, flavourings and scent, and then you mix it all up and leave it to cool in a refrigerator.
It really is that simple to do and, because it’s so cheap, you can afford to play around and experiment with different colours and flavours. Here are a few recipes for Vaseline lip gloss to get you thinking.
2. Vaseline and Kool Aid lip gloss
The simplest of all the homemade lip gloss recipes is one you can make with a flavoured drink powder such as Kool Aid.
Mix two tablespoons of Kool Aid with a tablespoon of Vaseline and heat it in a microwave until it has melted.
Give the mixture a good stir and then leave it in a refrigerator until it has cooled and set.
3. Make use of old eyeshadow
If you have some old remnants of an eyeshadow that you like, you can put that to good use in a lip gloss too.
Break up the eyeshadow into a fine powder and mix it well with some Vaseline. You could add some flavouring with Kool Aid powder, or food flavouring, if you wish.
Warm it up in the microwave, mix and allow it to set before you use it.
4. Use up the last of a lipstick
The same strategy works with an old tube of lipstick. Scrape out the last bits of a lipstick and mix in well with Vaseline, warm it in a microwave and leave it to set in the fridge.
You can make your own lip gloss with pretty much any pigmented makeup, including blush, which also works very well.
5. Mix and match the ingredients
You really can just have fun with the ingredients and make up your own recipes. If you wanted to make a lip gloss that will nourish and hydrate your lips, you could try mixing a tablespoon of Vaseline with half a teaspoon of jojoba oil and a teaspoon of shea butter.
Warm it in the same way as before in a microwave oven and then mix in colourings and flavourings of your choice.
6. Making lip gloss with beeswax
The method for making lip gloss with beeswax is very much the same as it for Vaseline. You melt the beeswax in a microwave, or in a double boiler, you add oil, such as coconut oil, and then you add colouring, flavouring, and a scent of your choice.
When you are making homemade lip gloss, with beeswax, or with Vaseline, it is important that you don’t overheat the ingredients. Here are a few recipes for making your own beeswax lip gloss.
7. Basic beeswax lip gloss
Recipes for beeswax lip gloss have more ingredients, but they are more durable and attractive than Vaseline-based versions.
Melt a tablespoon of cocoa butter and two teaspoons of beeswax to make a straightforward beeswax lip gloss.
When it has melted, stir in half a teaspoon of jojoba oil and a few drops of honey for some flavour and then allow the mixture to set.
8. Peppermint lip gloss
This is a straightforward lip gloss recipe that uses Vaseline and beeswax. We have used peppermint flavouring here, but you could use any flavouring.
Heat two tablespoons of Vaseline with a teaspoon of beeswax. Remove the mixture from the heat and then stir in ten drops of peppermint oil. Pour the mixture into a sealable container and leave it to set.
9. Honey and berry lip gloss
Beeswax and Vaseline are not the only things that you can use in a homemade lip gloss, this recipe uses almond oil and fresh berries instead.
Heat five fresh raspberries with a tablespoon of sweet almond oil, a drop of vitamin E oil, and a teaspoon of honey, until the mixture melts completely.
Mash up the berries and mix them well in with the other ingredients and then strain to remove the seeds of the berries. Pour into a container and leave to cool.
10. Honey and lemon lip gloss
Here’s a great tasting lip gloss recipe that will nourish and moisturise your lips. As with all these recipes, try adding your own colourings and ingredients as well.
Heat two tablespoons of beeswax with a teaspoon of jojoba oil. When the mixture has melted, add the contents of one vitamin E capsule, a teaspoon of honey and five drops of lemon flavouring. Combine everything thoroughly, then let it cool.
Stay beautiful!
